William Gribb Grindlay, surname also spelt Grindley, served as a Private (No.2815478) with the 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders out in India during the operations on the North West Frontier which lasted from 23rd April 1930 to 22nd March 1931.

Grindlay was subsequently present during the Second World War out in Burma and the Far East as a Warrant Officer 1st Class with the Seaforth Highlanders, and later transferred as a Warrant Officer 2nd Class to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, before joining the Royal Canadian Army as a Warrant Officer 1st Class and Regimental Sergeant Major (No.G-408828) with the Royal Canadian Artillery. Grindlay, who is confirmed as having been awarded the Coronation Medal 1953, was then awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration in Canadian Army Orders No.521 of 10th December 1956. His Mention in Despatches is not confirmed.
