James Norris initially saw service as a Private (No. 573365) with the 1st Battalion, 17th London Regiment and later as a Private (No. 52519) with the Rifle Brigade. He would be awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 17th June 1919 whilst serving with the 13th Battalion, Rifle Brigade, being noted as from Limehouse.
