Volunteer Officer's Decoration, EDVII Cypher, reverse with hallmarks for London with date letter ‘m’ for 1907, complete with top brooch bar. An exceptional example of type.

Instituted on 25th July 1892, the basic qualification was 20 years commissioned service in the Volunteer Force, a precursor of the Territorial Army, non-commissioned service counting half. By Royal Warrant of 24th May 1894 the decoration was extended to comparable forces overseas, the qualifying period for service in India being reduced to 18 years. The colonial VD was superseded in 1899 by the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers Decoration and the Indian Volunteer Forces Officers Decoration. In the United Kingdom it was superseded by the Territorial Decoration, on the formation of the Territorial Force in 1908. A total of 4,710 decorations were awarded. Awards in Bermuda continued until 1930.
