Arthur Draper was born in the parish of Woodhouse, near the twined of Highfield, Yorkshire on 31 August 1895 and was a miner at the time of his enlistment into the Royal Marines. He served in Gallipoli from 28 April 1915 and then France from 7 June 1916. He was taken prisoner by the Germans at Gavrelle on 26 April 1917 and remained in German hands until his repatriation on 28 December 1918.
