Awarded to Private (No. 32781) Ernest A. Smith, who having initially seen service with the Essex Regiment on the Western Front, later transferred to the South Wales Borderers, where he served as Private (No. 40770), before dying of wounds on 7^th June 1917. The son of Mr. W. Smith of Prospect House, Daws Heath, Thundersley, Essex. He was buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun.
