United States of America: State of Pennsylvania National Guard for World War Service with the 28th Division, bronze, triple ring suspension, compete with original ribbon and wearing pin. A good example of type.
Condition: Good Very Fine.
These medals were struck in two versions – one for National Guard service (in the 28th Division); one for federal service (i.e., enlisting in the US Army). The Pennsylvania National Guard was assigned to the front almost immediately on arriving in the Western front fighting mainly in the Argonne -Musse for the duration as part of the 28th Division. A nickname they had pickup as a unit during the civil war was upheld with their ability to fight and hold ground against overwhelming odds. They were called the "Iron Brigade" and suffered 14,000 casualties in the short time they were in combat. The seasoned German veterans, war weary from nearly 4 years of stalemate named the fresh American forces "Der Teufal hunds”… the devil dogs.
