This was the first time that soldiers from the Grand Alliance countries were invited to take part in the prestigious Russian parade on Red Square. Major Day Bevan, who commanded the 2nd Company on the occasion recorded that “we are extremely honoured and privileged to have been asked to represent HM Forces at the 65th May Day Parade in Red Square, Moscow”… “this is a unique experience for the Welsh Guards as we will be the first British troops to march in Moscow.” Two rather blurred photographs of the event are included with the group, one showing the Welsh Guards in their distinctive red tunics and bearskins taken during a group shot in front of Saint Basil’s in Moscow, its distinctive onion domes being visible in the background. The other is a photo of the men of the Welsh Guards being presented with their medals by a senior Russian officer. This event is well documented in video footage online.
