The tragic Campaign Service Medal 1962, 1 Clasp: Northern Ireland awarded to Lance Corporal J. Higgins, Royal Marines who saw service in Northern Ireland during the troubles and was sadly killed in an accident on 23rd July 1976 when he was demonstrating the death slide during a ‘Meet the Marines’ display at the Commando Training Centre, he had been descended from a roof when the rope snapped and he fell 15ft to the ground.

James Higgins saw service as a Lance Corporal (No. RM25746) with the Royal Marines in Northern Ireland during the troubles. He would tragically be killed in service on 23rd July 1976 when he was demonstrating the ‘Death Slide’ at a ‘Meet the Marines’ display at the Commando Training Centre, when the rope snapped and he fell 15 feet to his death.
The Daily Mirror of Saturday 24th July 1976 also reported that Higgins had been killed when making a spectacular descent a roof by a rope slide when the cable snapped.
