The Regimentally Unique British South Africa Company Medal 1890-1897, reverse Rhodesia 1896, bar Mashonaland 1897 awarded to Private W. Marshall, 2nd Battalion, West Riding Regiment who was present on active operations in support of the British South Africa Company during the Second Matabele War when present in Rhodesia in the period which lasted from 24th March to 31st December 1896, and in Mashonaland in the period from 24th March 1896 to 31st October 1897. Serving with the 7th Hussars he is the only man of the West Riding Regiment to be entitled to the Mashonaland bar.

William Marshall was born in St. Pancras, London and attesting in London on 6th August 1887 then saw service as Private (No. 2343) W. Marshall, 2nd Battalion, West Riding Regiment being present on active operations in support of the British South Africa Company during the Second Matabele War when present in Rhodesia in the period which lasted from 24th March to 31st December 1896, and in Mashonaland in the period from 24th March 1896 to 31st October 1897.
He would later also see service in South Africa during the Boer War between 29th December 1899 and 28th July 1902. He would then travel home and would be discharged on 31st August 1902.
This is a unique medal to the West Riding Regiment, with the Mashonaland bar being won with the 7th Hussars, this being confirmed on the roll, and in British Battles and Medals.
