The Order of Saint Michael and Saint George was founded by His Royal Highness the Prince Regent and awarded originally to citizens of Malta and the Ionian Islands in the Adriatic Sea, both of which had been ceded to Britain during the Napoleonic Wars. The Ionian Islands were transferred to Greece in 1859. Towards the end of the 19th Century, however, the Order was awarded to those who had performed distinguished service in the colonies and protectorates of the British Empire and in more recent times it has been widely used as an award to ambassadors and senior diplomats as well as to colonial governors. Ladies are now eligible for this Order. In recent operations a number of awards have been made to military officers, presumably for diplomatic work.
