The emotive pair of Great War Memorial Plaques to the Ruskin brothers. Private William Henry Ruskin, 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment died in France on 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment and is buried in Fillievres British Cemetery and his brother Private Phillip Albert Ruskin, 6th Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment who was killed in action on 17th February 1917 and having no known grave is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial as well as on the Hertford Town Memorial, Hertford Baptist Church Memorial and the Hertfordshire Regimental Memorial at All Saints Church, Hertford.

William Henry Ruskin was born and resided in Hertford before enlisting there and serving as a Private (No. 12022) with the 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment on the Western Front. He died on 4th May 1916 and is buried in Fillievres British Cemetery.

Phillip Albert Ruskin was born in Hertford, the son of William and Fanny (Cannon) Ruskin living in Maidenhead Street, Hertford at the time of the 1901 census and was living at 21 Green Street, Hertford in 1911 whilst working as a Grocer’s Assistant.
Having enlisted he would see service initially as a Private (No. 3189) with the Hertfordshire Regiment before transferring to the 6th Battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales’ (Royal Berkshire) Regiment with whom he was killed in action on 17th February 1917. Having no known grave he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial as well as on the Hertford Town Memorial, Hertford Baptist Church Memorial and the Hertfordshire Regimental Memorial at All Saints Church, Hertford.
