Edward Bennett was born in Arundel, Sussex, and was living there and working as a carter when he attested for service with the Volunteer Force on 1st February 1899 as a Private (No.260) with the 2nd Volunteer Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. On the formation of the Territorial Force in April 1908, he transferred across, and saw service as a Private with the 4th Territorial Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, attending his annual training at both Arundel and Worthing. Bennett re-engaged annually from 1909 through to 1916, and with the outbreak of the Great War he was embodied at Newhaven for service with the 1st/4th Battalion on 5th August 1914.
Posted to the 2nd/4th Battalion on 24th April 1915, he then transferred to the 72nd Provisional Battalion on 4th September 1915, and was latterly serving with the 70th Provisional Battalion when he was discharged at Hounslow on 16th August 1916, having seen home service throughout
