Heron saw service as a Private (No.717, and No.SPTS-4742 later No.GS-97582) with the 23rd Service Battalion - 1st Sportsman’s, Royal Fusiliers, being one of the early volunteers and as such was issued the Sportman’s Battalion Tribute Medal. Additionally entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
