Medal for the Peace of Morocco (Medalla ‘Paz de Marruecos’), 1927 was created on 21 November 1927 to commemorate the end of the campaign in the north of Morocco (the Rif) against the forces of Abd el-Krim who had set up the Republic of the Rif in September 1921, having defeated a Spanish force at Annual. In 1925 a large combined Spanish and French force attacked in overwhelming numbers, defeating Abd el-Krim by 1926, although guerrilla warfare continued into 1927. The medal was awarded to French as well as Spanish military, and also to civilians who participated in peacekeeping efforts. Additionally, Muslims and Israelites who had served in the Administration of the zone could also apply for it, as reflected in the Star of David that is sometimes seen affixed to the ribbon.
