Page 1: A rare 1880’s period troop group photograph showing officers and men of the Natal Mounted Infantry. The officer mounted forward, his men arrayed on horseback behind him, and the bugler on the right. In all 23 men are depicted. One man, who is mounted on a grey horse, is clearly shown wearing the South Africa Medal 1877-1889 with clasp. The other side has an image of 11 men of the unit with their dog, all of the white European men are shown either holding Martini Henry Carbines or the longer rifles. This is one black native member shown, his being similarly dressed but without shoes or rifle. It is believed that the two sitting on the ground in the centre are officers with the unit.
Page 2: A page, one side of which has two images, one being of eight men of the Natal Mounted Contingent, one of whom is wearing the South Africa Medal 1877-1889 with clasp. The photograph above this shows the students of the Girls Collegiate School at Maritzburg, correctly Pietermaritzburg, one name being identified as a Maud Winsfield-Straftord, this being possibly the headteacher. The other side has a single large photograph showing a group of European / Afrikaans men (possibly Natal Mounted Contingent) relaxing for the camera whilst drinking beer. In the background and clearly on serving duty are two black native’s and an Indian.
