Edwin Cooper was born in Broughton, near Stockbridge in Hampshire and giving his trade as a painter and glazier attested in London on 19th July 1864 noting previous service in the Hampshire Militia Infantry.
He would see 21 years service with the Royal Engineers, all of this being in the UK. He would be discharged as a Company Serjeant Major on 21st July 1885 and would be in receipt of a gratuity of £5 for Long Service and Good Conduct and would claim a pension of 20% from the Chelsea Board.
