Charles Hookway was born in St Mary Major, Devon in 1843, he would attest on 19th December 1861 and see service as Gunner (No.932) Royal Artillery. He would later be awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal and would be discharged on 1st June 1886. He had spent the majority of his service with the Coastal Brigade, Royal Artillery. This is the recipients sole medal entitlement.
