James Ruston was born in Dublin and enlisting on 22nd October 1849 saw 19 years 80 days service in the 2nd Battalion, Grenadier Guards before being discharged on 10th July 1872, the initial period of service being as an underage soldier. Upon his discharge his conduct was noted as very good. He was in possession of four good conduct badges. He had never been entered in the Regimental defaulters book nor had he been court-martialled during his service.
