The Serbian Medal for Zeal (also known as the Medal for Zealous Service) was established in 1913 by King Peter I. Instituted on April 19 (May 1), 1913, in two classes, as Gold and Silver, during the First Balkan War as an award for privates, sergeants, officers and civilians for zealous service both in and for the Serbian Army, as well as for servicemen of the allied armies. Awards continued throughout the First World War and beyond. After the Second World War and the creation of the second Yugoslavia, all decorations of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia were abolished, including the Medal for Zealous Service.
