Second World War North Africa, Sicily and Italy campaign, and Territorial long service group awarded to Trooper sometime Sergeant J.L. Horswell, Reconnaissance Corps, and apparently sometime 11th Hussars. Horswell, according to a surviving photograph, was at Gioiosa Marea in Messina, Sicily, in September 1943, when identified as with the Reconnaissance Corps.

Together with a group photograph printed as a postcard showing men from ‘A “3” Block 5. M.T. (Mechanical Transport) Technician Stores Ack Ack’ at Gioiosa Marea in Messina, Sicily in September 1943. All soldiers in the image are identified with annotated surnames and ranks, with the then Sergeant Horswell being identified as back row second from right. The men are all clearly wearing the cap badge of the Reconnaissance Corps on their berets.
Awarded to Trooper sometime Sergeant (No.796879) J.L. Horswell, Reconnaissance Corps. Horswell, according to research, had sometime seen service with the 11th Prince Albert’s Own Hussars which formed part of the 7th Armoured Division in North Africa, however as of September 1943 he was at Gioiosa Marea in Messina, Sicily, shortly after the island had been captured. At this time he was identified as part of a group of men, all Reconnaissance Corps, who according to a note on the back of the photograph, were with ‘A “3” Block 5. M.T. (Mechanical Transport) Technician Stores Ack Ack’. Horswell was then a Sergeant. Horswell, a pre-war member of the Territorial Army, was awarded the Efficiency Medal in Army Orders No.20 of January 1946.
