Laurence Somers was a pre-war member of the Territorial Army who was then commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant (No.137266) into the King’s Royal Rifle Corps as published into the London Gazette on 28th June 1940. Somers saw service during the Second World War with the 1st Army in North Africa. Remaining in the service post-war, he switched from an Emergency Commission to a Short Service Commission with the Regular Army as a Lieutenant with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps on 19th September 1951, with seniority backdated to 16th February 1948.Somers was promoted to Captain on 16th February 1952, and then switched to the Regular Army Reserve of Officers on 19th September 1954, before being awarded the Efficiency Medal with Territorial suspension in the London Gazette for 18th November 1955.
