James Alfred Sams saw service as a Petty Officer Stoker Mechanic (No. KX.82237) with the Royal Navy during the Second World War and would participate in the operations in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. He would be Mentioned in Despatches in the London Gazette of 14th June 1945 for his service aboard H.M.S. Byrsa, and would be awarded his Long Service Good Conduct Medal whilst serving aboard the Loch Class Frigate H.M.S. Loch Fada which had seen service off the Normandy coast and in the English Channel during 1944 before later being present in operations in the Atlantic in 1945.
