John Edward Hill saw service as an Electrical Artificer 1st Class (No.P/JX.48496) with Royal Navy, and saw extensive service during the Second World War in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, before being awarded the Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 25th January 1946 whilst with the repair ship Moray Firth. This ship was only in commission with the Admiralty between July 1945 and December 1947 and Hill appears to have been the only recipient of the long service medal when named to this ship, after a check through the online list for naval medal rolls. Hill went on to see service during the Korean War.
