John Barry saw service as a Private (No. 2772) with the 59th (2nd Nottinghamshire) Regiment of Foot and was present at Tralee, Ireland at the time of the 1851 Census and would then present on operations in China, and saw service during the Second Opium War of 1856 to 1860, being present in action during the siege and capture of Canton from 28th December 1857 to 5th January 1858.
At the time of the 1861 census, Barry would be present at Fort Beaufort Cape of Good Hope.
