The Title Mother Heroine was established by a decree of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on 8th July 1944. The Order ‘Mother Heroine’ was established one month later on 18th August 1944. These awards were the highest awards in a series for women who had given birth to and reared large numbers of children. Along with the title and the order, the awardee received a large document from the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, which was similar to those given to a hero of the Soviet Union and Hero of Socialist Labour. A small identification booklet was also given to the recipient. The first awards of the title ‘Mother Heroine’ with the order ‘Mother Heroine’ were made on November 1st 1944. M.I. Kalinin awarded fourteen women the title, with the order, in the Kremlin. Anna Savalevna Aleksakhima was given order number 1 for giving birth to 12 children. By 1991, almost 500,000 had been awarded.
