The Medal for the Defence of the Caucasus was awarded to all participants in the Defence of the Caucasus, soldiers of the Red Army, sailors of the Navy, troops of the NKVD, as well as persons of the civilian population who took part in the Defence of the Caucasus during the Battle of the Caucasus.
Variation 3 medals were issued to veterans by their local Military Commissariat, and were generally ‘catch up’ awards made post war to those who had been missed or overlooked in the initial issues.
