Nikolai Mikhailovich Yakimov was born in the village of Cheremushka in Kumarsky District, Amur Oblast in 1924. A Russian national he completed 8 grades of education before subsequently joining the Red Navy in 1942, receiving a Medal for Combat Merits for 10 years long service on 27th December 1951 and where at the time of this award of the Red Star for 15 years long service on 30th April 1954, by decree of the Northern Fleet, he was employed as a Captain of the Technical Service and Flagship Torpedo Officer for Torpedo Fire Control Devices, 33rd Red Banner Order of Ushakov Submarine Division, Northern Fleet.
