Varsenik Vaganovna Salakhyan was born in 1906 in what is now Turkey but at that time was Armenia.
After graduating from university, she worked at the Republican Central Statistical office, then as a technician at the People’s Commissariat of Agriculture of the Armenian SSR, and was involved in improving the irrigation system – the Stalin Canal. Since 1936, she worked in different sections of the Artashat Water Canal, and since 1940, she was the head of the 2nd Hydraulic Section, which supplied water from the Araks River to the cotton plantations and vineyards of the Artashat Region. In 1949 she joined the CPSU(b)/CPSU.
In 1949, the workers of the Artashat region received a particularly high cotton harvest on the irrigated lands of the collective farm fields. This became possible largely thanks to the activities of the head of the hydraulic section, whose work ensured that the planned cotton harvest for collective farms served was exceeded by 28.6 percent.
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated October 16, 1950, for obtaining high cotton yields on irrigated lands in 1949, Varsenik, Vaganovna Salakhyan was awarded the title of Hero of Socialist Labour with the Order of Lenin and the Hammer and Sickle gold medal.
In subsequent years, she continued to work at the Artashat water utility until her retirement.
Since 1972, personal pensioner of union significance. She lived in the regional centre – the city of Artashat, now the regional centre of the Ararat region of Armenia. She died in 1985.
