Condition: Good very fine
Dmitry Ivanovich Timin was born in the village of Rostani, Antushevo Rural Municipality, Belozersk Raion in 1892. Having attained an elementary education, he appears to have been called up later in the war and saw service in the Red Army between 3rd May 1943 and November 1943. He served as a Rifleman in the 2nd Battalion, 1246th Rifle Regiment, 374th Rifle Division on the Volkhov Front and was severely wounded in the scrotum and right eye on 18th August 1943 whilst serving with this unit. He was awarded this Order of the Red Star, his only numbered award on 6th August 1946, one of a series of awards that were issued after the end of hostilities, often to individuals severely wounded in combat, or to those whose award recommendations had been missed during the war. The citation for this award was as follows:
‘The platoon in which comrade Timin served was ordered to conduct a reconnaissance mission, discover the enemy’s firing positions and plot their locations, and cover the 2nd Battalion, which was advancing on the left. Along with the rest of his platoon comrade Timin commenced the reconnaissance mission. Once they had approached the German line of defence, they engaged in battle and dislodged the Germans. However, the enemy guns were trained in their direction. The platoon held its ground in the enemy trenches until morning the next day, and only after it had accomplished their assignment, as ordered, did it withdraw to its initial positions and push forward as part of the battalion. During this battle Comrade Timin was severely wounded , after which he was evacuated to the rear to undergo treatment and then transferred to the reserves. At the present time he works at a collective farm.
The above is based on his oral testimony. I apply for comrade Timin to be awarded the Medal for Courage.
Signed by the Military Commissar of the Belozersk Raion, Captain Artamonov.
Timin was also to receive the Medal for the Victory over Germany., and was to work as the Manager of the Commercial dairy farm of the ‘Selkor’ Kolkhoz, Belozersk Raion after the war, whilst living in the village of Rostani, Antushevo Rural Municipality, Belozersk Raion, Vologda Oblast.
