Vasily Alekseevich Stupenkov was born in Leningrad in 1905. A Russian national he attained a higher education and served in the Red Army between 1941 and 1943.
This Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class would be awarded to him by decree of the Supreme Soviet on 6th November 1947 and was a post-war award for wounds. A Former Red Army Soldier and Scout of the 465th Rifle Regiment, he would fight on the Voronezh Front between 20th July 1942 and 18th November 1942, the citation reading
‘Red Army Soldier Stupenkov V.A. was a combatant of the Patriotic War from 20th July 1942 to 18th November 1942 on the Voronezh Front as part of the 465th Rifle Division in the position of scout.
On 18th November 1942, Comrade Stupenkov was severely wounded in the face by a grenade explosion, with loss of the right eye.
The wound is confirmed by certificate of Evacuation Hospital 3990 of 22.10.1943 No2/2210. He is an invalid of the III group. He works at the Academy of Arts as Deputy President for Administrative Affairs.
He has been evaluated positively. Deserves awarding of the Order of the Red Star for wounds.’
He would later receive a Medal for Victory over Germany and a Medal for Valiant Labour in the Great Patriotic War and on 13th January 1948 was working as a purchaser for the Invalids Cooperation Union of the Latvian SSR
