The Distinguished Labour Medal was an award for civil labour of the Soviet Union, given to particularly deserving workers to celebrate excellence in work or contributions to science, culture or manufacturing. For a little more than fifty years of its existence, more than two million worthy citizens were granted the medal. Created on 27th December 1938 by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. Its charter was amended three times, first on June 19, 1943 to change its description and ribbon, then on 16th December 1947 to amend the rules, and finally on 18th July 1980 to confirm all previous amendments. The medal ceased to be awarded after the collapse of the Soviet Union in December 1991.
