Ilya Pavlovich Burakin was born in 1902, and was serving as a Private, telephone operator in an independent signals company of the 761st Rifle Regiment. A Ukrainian, Buchakin served in the Red Army from 24th August 1941, having been drafted by the Military Commissariat of the Armavir Raion, Krasnodar Krai, at the time he was a resident of 49 Rosa Luxembourg Street, Armavir, Krasnodar, and his wife is given as Maria Yegorovna Donskaya. This Medal for Bravery issued to him by Order of the 761st Rifle Regiment on 21st October 1944, appears to be his only award, and was given to him as a result of the following citation:
‘Senior telephone operation in a signals company Private Ilya Pavlovich Buchakin, for the fact that he, during the entire period he has been with the Regiment, starting in October 1943, showed himself a brave and decisive soldier. During the fighting for height 642.0 in the Penchenagi Raion of the Stanislav Oblast on May 17, 1944 he repaired several cable breaks under heavy enemy fire, aiding the command. For the full extent of the offensive fighting between 25th July 1944 and 8th August 1944 he displayed initiatives and bravery in order to guarantee the communication.’
The recommendation was signed by the Commander of the 761st Rifle Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Grafsky, 761st Rifle Regiment and the Temporary Chief of Staff Captain Korniyenko.
