Russia – Soviet: A Narva River fighting Order of the Red Star awarded to Reserve Junior Lieutenant Vasily Mikhailovich Petrov, a Mortar Platoon Leader in the 308th Rifle Regiment,98th Rifle Division, for rousing his men to action and killing six Germans with his submachine gun.

Reserve Junior Lieutenant Vasily Mikhailovich Petrov was born in the city of Leningrad in 1923, and having attained a secondary education joined the Red Army in July 1941 and served throughout the Great Patriotic War.
Petrov served as a Mortar Platoon leader in the 308th Rifle Regiment, 98th Rifle Division, he was to awarded the Order of the Red Star by order of the 98th Rifle Division on 27th March 1944 on the back of the following citation:
‘Deployed on the left bank of the Narva River on February 16, 1944 Comrade Petrov repelled multiple enemy counterattacks. Through personal example he roused his men to action and inspired them to perform heroic deeds. During this battle he killed 6 Germans with his submachine gun.’
The recommendation was signed by the Commander of the 308th Rifle Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Naumov.
This was Petrov’s only numbered award, he was also in receipt of the Medal for the Defence of Leningrad and Medal for the Victory over Germany.
After the war he worked as an Electrician ‘Lenenergoremont’, in the city of Leningrad, he was a resident of Apartment 12, 23 Borovaya Street, city of Leningrad.
