Ivan Afanasevich Volvach was born in the village of Novo-Prokopevka, Bolshe-Tokmaksky District, Zaporozhye District during 1919. A Ukrainian national he attained a middle school education and joined the Red Army in November 1939.
He would see service during the Patriotic War, receiving a Medal for Bravery by decree of the Leningrad Front no 22nd July 1945, he would then receive a Medal for the Victory over Germany, a Medal for Combat Merits for 10 years long service on 15th November 1950 and an Order of the Red Star by decree of the Supreme Soviet on 30th December 1956 for 15 years long service.
in December 1957 the recipient was employed as the Head of the NCO School, 5th Independent Signals Regiment, Kiev Military District whilst being a resident of Field Post 63210.
