Russia – Soviet: A late award of the Order of Glory 3rd Class awarded to Matvei Zakharovich Kholodov, most likely issued for wounds, he had been a member of the 792nd Rifle Regiment, 390th Infantry Division during the fighting for the Crimean Peninsula during 1942, when his unit was finally destroyed as part of the German Operation ‘Bustard Hunt’.
Order of Glory 3rd Class, type 2, numbered 763618
Condition: Toned, Nearly extremely fine
Matvei Zakharovich Kholodov was born in the village of Mishino, Murom Raion, Vladimir Oblast in 1909, and having completed 2 classes of education served in the Red Army from 5th November 1941 until 10th July 1942 as a Rifleman in the 792nd Rifle Regiment.
792nd Rifle Regiment was part of 390th Infantry Division which fought on the Crimean Peninsula in 1941-42, eventually being destroyed in Operation Bustard Hunt, the German offensive that successfully captured the Peninsula in July 1942.
Without citation, this award is almost certainly a ‘catch-up’ award for wounds, a number of which were awarded from the late 1960s onward to Red Army veterans who had received no other decorations.
