Russia – Soviet: A good Karelian fighting Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class awarded to Junior Lieutenant Sergei Ivanovich Sokolov, PTR Platoon Commander, 763rd Rifle Regiment, 114th Rifle Division, 7th Army, Karelian Front for wounds received on 12th July 1944 during the fighting to liberate the railway station of Pikaratka.

Sergei Ivanovich Sokolov was born in the village of Toshkovo in Kubenovo-Ozersky District, Vologda Oblast in 1922. A Russian national he attained a middle school education before joining the Red Army and serving between September 1941 and April 1945, he would serve on the Karelian Front with the 7th Army as part of the 763rd Rifle Regiment, 114th Rifle Division between 20th January 1942 and 12th July 1944.
He would be awarded this Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class by decree of the Supreme Soviet on 6th November 1947 whilst serving as a Junior Lieutenant, PTR Platoon Commander, 763rd Rifle Regiment, 114th Rifle Division, 7th Army, Karelian Front. The citation reading as follows:
‘Comrade Sokolov, Sergei Ivanovich was in the Active Army on the Karelian Front from 20th January 1942 until 12th July 1944 in the position of PTR Platoon Commander, 763rd Rifle Regiment, 114th Rifle Division, 7th Army. From 20th January 1942 until January 1944, he was on the defensive line, and from 20th January 1944 until 25th June 1944, he completed the Karelian Front’s Jr. Lieutenant Courses. After graduation from the course he was appointed PTR Platoon Commander in the 763rd Rifle Regiment.
During the offensive by units of the Red Army starting 1 July 1944 in the area of Pikaratka to liberate the railway station of Pikaratka on 12th July 1944, he suffered a severe fragmentation wound in the right shin. From there he was sent to the hospital for treatment. At Evacuation Hospital No. 1184, his leg was amputated below the knee.
After recuperation, the commission at Evacuation Hospital No. 1184 deemed him unfit for military service, with exclusion from registration.
He was dismissed from the Red Army as an invalid of the Patriotic War. His wound is confirmed by a wound certificate from Evacuation Hospital No.1184 dated 6th April 1945.
Conclusion: For participation in battles against the German-Fascist invaders and suffering a severe wound in the process, I motion for awarding Jr. Lieutenant Sokolov S.I. the government award the Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class.’
By 2nd February 1948 Sokolov would be working as a Workplace Safety Inspector, in the Severny Kommunar Factory in the city of Vologda whilst a resident of the city.
