Georgy Ananevich Tikhonov was born in the city of Tugai, Kustanaisky District in 1908. A Ukrainian national, he attained an elementary education and served in the Red Army on the Western Front from June 1941 through to the end of the war.
This Order of the Red Star was his sole award issued by decree of the 199th Rifle Division on 18th March 1945 whilst serving as a Red Army Soldier and driver in the 61st Sapper Company, 199th Rifle Division of Western Front as a result of the following recommendation:
‘Comrade Tikhonov is the driver of a Gaz-AA vehicle of the Evacuation Transport Platoon, 2nd Independent Medical-Sanitary Battalion. During his service in the platoon since 25.8.1944, he has proven himself to be a disciplined, self-possessed, and knowledgeable driver. The vehicle entrusted to him is in a good working order and he …… (illegible) carries out all orders and missions from Command. In the month of January 1945 alone, he has covered a distance of 2675km on his vehicle without accidents. During the redeployment of the Medical-Sanitary Battalion, he always managed assigned missions quickly and on time, which facilitated rapid provision of medical aid and saving the lives of wounded. Comrade Tikhonov renders assistance to fellow drivers unconditionally and has received a number of certificates of gratitude. Sparing with fuel and lubricant consumption, he saved 23kg of fuel in the month of January and transported from 230 wounded soldiers and officers to the first aid station.’
Surviving the war, he was temporarily unemployed and living in the village of Semiozyornoe in Kustainsky Oblast by December 1947.
