Grigory Matveevich Vertetksy was born in the village of Ripki, Lysyansky District, Kiev Oblast in 1913. He saw service in the Red Army between October 1935 and November 1937, and from June 1941 until April 1942, before finally serving between April and November 1944 as a Efreitor (Corporal) in the position of Telephonist, 415th Artillery Brigade, 207th ‘Pomeranian’ Red Banner Order of Suvorov 2nd Class Rifle Division.
This award was made by a decree of 9th October 1945 and handed out on 5th February 1951. At this time he was working as a collective farmer in the village of Ripki, Lysyansky District, Kiev Oblast.
207th Rifle Division would later go on to be involved in the storming of and capture of the Kroll Opera House opposite the Reichstag in Berlin.
