Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, VR, awarded to Sergeant Robert Cross, Royal Marine Light Infantry who would be present at the Battle of Tel-El-Kebir whilst serving aboard H.M.S. Repulse and would be still aboard when awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in May 1883.

Robert Cross was born in Wainfleet, Lincolnshire and enlisted into the Royal Marines on 10th July 1872 joining the Chatham Division. He would see service aboard HMS Hector from 1st October 1874 until 30th September 1876 this being a Coast Guard ship in Southampton Water. He would then return to serve with Chatham Division, Royal Marines travelling to Egypt on 29th January 1882, and being posted to H.M.S. Repulse on 22nd December 1882 which was acting as the guardship at Hull, being awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in May 1883, shortly after receiving an Egypt Medal with clasp Tel-El-Kebir.
He would return to the Chatham Division on 1st April 1885 and remained there until he joined Inflexible on 1st July 1890 remaining there until 3rd June 1893 when he would once more return to ashore for a month before being discharged on 14th July 1893.
