Thomas Snelling was born in Gosport, Hampshire and joined for 10 years on 3rd June 1863, by 1st January 1873 he was serving as an Armourer aboard HMS Excellent before being appointed a Plumber on 1st March 1874, subsequently being awarded the Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal whilst in this role.
He would serve with Vernon from 26th April 1876 until 10th August 1877, Asia from 11th August 1877 until 7th October 1878, Malabar from 8th October 1878 until 15th May 1879 and finally Asia once more from 16th May 1879 until he was pensioned ashore 21st May 1880.
