Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, GVR awarded to Petty Officer C.J.E. Little, Royal Navy who was issued his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 15th June 1936 this having been awarded whilst aboard H.M.S. Defiance. He would go on to see service during the initial months of the Second World War aboard H.M.S. Maori, aboard which he would see action in the North Sea and during the Norwegian Campaign.

Clitherow James Ernest Little was born in Bristol on 3rd April 1903 and giving his trade as fitters mate joined for 12 years on 3rd April 1921, having previously served as a Boy Sailor since 26th August 1919. He would transfer to Powerful on 13th October 1919 and then Impregnable on 1st December 1919 being advanced to Boy 1st Class on 17th October 1920. After short periods aboard King George V, and Orion he would transfer to Cardiff on 20th November 1920 before being appointed an Ordinary Seaman on 3rd April 1921 being promoted to Able Seaman 14 march 1922. He would transfer to Defiance on 21st July 1923 after a short period ashore and would be aboard Ramilles on 28th April 1925 when he was promoted to Leading Seaman, subsequently advanced to Acting Petty Officer on Berwick on 26th September 1932, and Petty Officer on 26th September 1933.
He would be awarded a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 15th June 1936. Then would be promoted to Chief Petty Officer on 27th January 1938 and would be serving aboard H.M.S. Maori on the outbreak of war. Aboard Maori he would take part in North Sea patrols and during the Norwegian Campaign before transferring to Defiance, the Royal Navy Torpedo School on 26th August 1940 being promoted Temporary Acting Gunner on 19th September 1940.
