Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, EVII awarded to Chief Writer S.H. Miles, Royal Navy, who saw service off the south east coast of America aboard HMS Flora and later in the Caribbean aboard HMS Isis amongst other appointments and was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal whilst serving at HMS Indus, the shore establishment at Devonport, he would continue to serve ashore during the Great War.

Stephen Henry Miles, the son of Stephen Miles the locally well-known Royal Navy Scripture reader of over 50 years, was born in Morice Town, Plymouth, Devon on 6th October 1875, and joined the Royal Navy on 1st April 1895 initially serving as a 3rd Writer at Vivid I until on 23rd July 1895 he transferred to Colussus, a series of short appointments would follow, leaving Colossus on 20th August 1895, he would then serve ashore with Vivid I from 21st August 1895 to 9th January 1896, before being posted to Cambridge from 10th January to 7th February 1896, Vivid I from 8th February to 1st June 1896, Albacore from 2nd June 1896 to 1st September 1896, Vivid I from 2nd September 1896 to 8th September 1896 until on 9th September 1896 he was posted to Impregnable where he would remain until 13th July 1898.
On 14th July 1898 he would be posted to Flora, the Senior Officer’s ship on the south-east coast of America station, serving there until 7th June 1901 and being promoted 2nd Write on 31st March 1900. After Flora he would be posted back to Vivid I on 8th June 1901, before transferring to Howe on 11th August 1901 and subsequently Empress of India from 13th October 1901 until 15th September 1902, and Cambridge on 16th September 1902, being promoted 1st Writer on 31st March 1903 whilst aboard. He would leave Cambridge for Isis, the training depot ship on the West Indies station on 23rd April 1905, a posting he held until 29th April 1907 and being promoted Chief Writer on 30th March 1907.
From 30th March 1907 until 29th April 1907 he was ashore with Vivid I, before being posted to the Royal Navy Shore Establishment Indus at Devonport on 11th May 1907 and remaining there until 15th May 1911, transferring to Leviathan from that date until 13th February 1913.
He would be posted to Vivid I on 14th February 1913 and would remain there for the duration of the Great War being demobilised on 19th June 1921.
