Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, EVII awarded to Chief Stoker T. Sturgess, H.M.S Orion, Royal Navy who saw service on both the China Station in Hong Kong and on the Mediterranean station where he was involved in the evacuation of British nationals after the Greek uprising on Crete in 1897.

Thomas Burgess was born in Pembroke Dock on 2nd August 1865 and joined for 12 years service on 18th April 1888 initially serving as a Stoker 2nd Class aboard Asia. He would be promoted to Stoker 1st Class on Leander on 1st July 1889 during his service on the China Station at Hong Kong, then to Leading Stoker 2nd Class with Pembroke on 30th November 1894 and Leading Stoker 1st Class aboard Barfleur on 6th September 1896 during his aboard which, he would be 1involved in the evacuation of British nationals during the Greek uprising on Crete. He would be appointed Acting Chief Stoker with Pembroke on 25th April 1898, Chief Stoker on Isis on 25th April 1900 before being awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 29th May 1903 whilst serving aboard Orion. He would transfer to the Royal Fleet Reserve in April 1910, his pension having been issued on 18th March 1910.
