Condition: small edge-bruise to the obverse rim at 4 o’clock, otherwise Nearly Extremely Fine
John Harwood was born in Boston, Lincolnshire on 6th December 1837 and initially served with the Royal Navy from 26th February 1855, initially seeing service with Simoom, which at that time was in the Crimea supporting operations at Kerch and Yenikale. He would move on to the Princess Royal on 7th September 1856, Queen on 6th December 1859, Excellent on 16th December 1863 and then Victoria on 10th June 1865 where he served with the rank of Captain of the Main Top.
He would then sign on for further service on 12th December 1866, initially serving with Excellent, before transferring to Lord Marden on 1st August 1867, and transferring back to Excellent on 25th September 1870, promoted Gunner’s Mate on 31st December 1872, he would be serving aboard Clyde at the time of the award of the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 26th May 1875. He would be discharged ashore on 10th August 1876 with the rank of Petty Officer 1st Class.
