Thomas Arnold was born in Weedon near Daventry and giving his trade as a Miner attested at Leek on 19th September 1894. Initially serving at home, he would travel to Egypt on 24th September 1895 where he would take part in the reconquest of the Sudan including Hafir which is on the west bank of the Nile opposite Kerma, and it was here that the battle was fought from 19th to 26th September 1896. The force then advanced and reached Merowe on 26th September, and Dongola on 15th October 1896. He would leave Egypt on 11th October 1897 and would subsequently serve in the East Indies until 15th November 1906.
