George Farrell (note incorrect initial on medal) was born at Plumstead, Kent and giving his trade as Labourer joined the Royal Navy for 12 years service on 3rd October 1892 initially as a Stoker 2nd Class, he would be appointed Stoker aboard H.M.S. Hood on 18th February 1894. He was subsequently promoted Leading Stoker 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. Sans Pareil on 1st May 1900, and on 6th September 1900 transferred to H.M.S. Barracouta, where he served as a Leading Stoker 1st Class and Acting Chief Stoker undertaking the role of a Blacksmith.
He would rejoin on 6th October 1904 for further service and in 1913 was serving aboard H.M.S. Eclipse.
