Queen’s South Africa Medal 1899-1902, no clasp awarded to Driver J. Freer, 61st Battery, Royal Field Artillery who had earlier served in India where he took part in the operations on Punjab Frontier during 1897 and 1898. Having been transferred to the Army Reserve he would be recalled for the Boer War during which he would be present on operations in the Cape Colony, and during the relief of Ladysmith including the forcing of the Tugela Heights in February 1900. Also present in action at Laing’s Nek and Belfast and on operations in the Orange Free State.

John Freer attested on 28th May 1890 and would initially serve at home, until on 10th March 1891 he would travel to India, where he would serve until 28th March 1898 including taking part in the operations on the Punjab Frontier during 1897 and 1898. He would return home and be transferred to the reserve no 31st March 1898.
Recalled under the Special Army Order of 7th October 1899, he would travel to South Africa with 61st Battery, Royal Field Artillery, arriving there on 11th November 1899 and taking part in the Boer War being present on operations in the Cape Colony, and during the relief of Ladysmith including the forcing of the Tugela Heights in February 1900. Also present in action at Laing’s Nek and Belfast and on operations in the Orange Free State.
He would return home on 13th July 1902 and be discharged on 24th July 1902
