Henry Anderson was born in Canning Town, West Ham, London and attested at Romford on 17th July 1900, he would serve at home until 2nd March 1901 when he travelled to South Africa to take part in the Boer War where he would be present during the operations on Cape Colony and Orange Free State as well as in the actions at Belfast, Johannesburg and Diaond Hill whilst serving as a Private (No. 6866) with the 1st Volunteer Company, 1st Battalion, Essex Reigment.
