Jesse Knifton Tyler was born in Westcott, Dorking, Surrey. Giving his trade as a Porter he attested at London on 2nd April 1900. Travelling to South Africa on 6th July 1901 with 4th Shorncliffe Mounted Infantry before later serving with 2nd Battalion, East Kent Regiment he would see service during the Boer War on operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal.
Returning to the UK on 5th July 1902 he remained in service until his discharge on 1st April 1912. A man with this exact and unusual name also saw service as a Private (No. 19890) in the East Kent Regiment during the Great War and was entitled to a British War Medal and Victory Medal.
