James John Hills was born at St. Georges, Middlesex and attested at Chatham on 12th July 1900 giving his trade as a painter and would see service in South Africa with 2nd Battalion – East Kent Regiment – the Buffs from 6th July 1901 until 27th October 1902 seeing service during the Boer War on operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal.
He would then return home until 6th June 1905 when he travelled to South Africa remaining there until 26th October 1908. After a brief period in Hong Kong where he remained until 4th December 1910, he would return home, being fischarged on 18th January 1913.
